TIMELINE PERIOD: After the end of the anime
BACKGROUND: Ryuk is a death god who looks somewhat human, except with yellow eyes, red pupils, pale grey skin, abnormally long arms, and a perpetual grin that barely changes and masks his intentions most of the time. His outfit consists of what appears to be a leather rock/bondage outfit with chains and belts scattered about it and crowned around the shoulder area with feathers.

Ryuk is somewhat of a lazy thrillseeker, he loves to see what other people will do in situations he starts, but is apathetic at the thought of doing much of importance. He is normally invisible unless someone comes into contact with his Deathnote, a notebook from the Shinigami realm that, when someone's name is written in it (according to a set of rules) will die. Ryuk is also rather limber and acrobatic, as shown by a few episodes where he does handstands and twists around in a comical withdrawl from apples, which he absolutely loves to eat, and can fly via a pair of wings that inexplicably sprout from his shoulders.

Throughout the anime, he has previously somehow obtained a second deathnote by tricking the shinigami king, and proceeds to 'drop' his deathnote in the human world because he is bored of the shinigami world. Yagami Light finds the notebook, starting the story proper, while Ryuk simply sits back most of the time and watches gleefully as Light begins his quest to rid the world of crime, only revealing some important aspect of the deathnote when a situation gets to the point where Light has nearly no choice but to use the provided escape route. Sometimes, however, Ryuk will do some small helpful gesture (such as scouting out security cameras in light's room) to obtain his precious apples.
